For as long as he can remember, music has been Tim’s greatest passion.  As a child, He remembers watching his father tap out beats on the steering wheel as they tooled down the road.  The antique jukebox in his grandmother’s basement played 45’s from several decades and he would stand by it with his broken guitar and pretend to play until it was time to go home.

It was at the age of 10 he began to study the saxophone.   Learning the lessons was quick work for him and he would spend much of his time learning little melodies he heard on the television or the radio. When he reached the 6th grade he made his big début and played the “Star Spangled Banner” for the school talent show.

When Tim reached middle school and band was part of his regular day he enjoyed it, but did not take it seriously. Then something interesting happened. There was an opening in the “Stage Band” for tenor saxophone.  He didn’t have a tenor so he managed to borrow one from his first teacher and tried out.  He made the cut.  This was Tim’s first contact with jazz.

By the time Tim reached high school, music was filling nearly all of his extracurricular time.  He was first chair alto saxophonist in freshman band and was invited into varsity band later that same year; where he also held first chair.

College was a time of discovery.  Tim started as a saxophone performance major but it did not take long to realize that a performance degree in rural Iowa was not going to be terribly useful, so he switched his academic focus to music education.

Shortly after receiving an undergraduate degree, Tim took a teaching position in Pueblo, Colorado. In 2000 he moved to the Houston, TX area and established roots in the music community. Since relocating, Tim has taught music education in both public and charter schools; been a private instructor for saxophone, clarinet, flute, and guitar; recorded and performed with many local artists as well as national acts including Diane Schuur and Bill Evans.

In 2009, Tim received a master’s in music from University of Houston and began teaching in higher education. Currently Tim is on faculty with three Houston area colleges and continues perform in Houston and the surrounding area.
